Lot 3308
Symeon, protospatharios epi tou Chrysotriklinou and son of Petros Chalinziotes, mid 11th century. Seal (Lead, 26 mm, 16.38 g, 12 h). Θ / Π/Є... Facing bust of Saint Peter, nimbate, holding long cruciform sceptre in his right hand. Rev. [+KЄ] R,Θ, / [CV]MЄⲰN A,/[CΠ]AΘ ЄΠI T / [XP Γ] KΛ T૪ V / [ΠЄ]T, T૪ XA/[ΛIN]ZIO in six lines. Apparently unpublished, but see Cheynet/Theodoridis 47 (standing figure of St. Peter). An intriguing seal mentioning family name and patronym. Struck somewhat off center, otherwise, very fine.

Cheynet and Theodoridis publish the seals of three members of the otherwise unknown Chalinziotes family (Konstantinos, Moses and Symeon), whose name may derive from an eastern toponym. The seal of Symeon in the Theodoridis collection depicts a standing Saint Peter on its obverse, but the reverse is spaced and abbreviated identically to ours. Both seals must thus belong to the same individual, adding another seal type to this rarely attested family
